Island Transfers Explained

Once you land at Velana International Airport in Malé, you'll need a transfer to your resort. The method depends on which atoll your island is in.

🚤

Speedboat

Most common for resorts near Malé. 20–60 min ride. Arranged by resort, typically A$80–150 return.

Best for: North & South Malé Atolls
🛥️

Seaplane

The most scenic way to arrive. 20–45 min flight over turquoise atolls. Usually included by luxury resorts. A$300–600 return.

Best for: Baa, Ari, Lhaviyani Atolls
✈️

Domestic Flight

For remote southern atolls. 30–50 min on Maldivian Air Taxi or Manta Air, then a short speedboat. A$150–300 return.

Best for: Addu, Laamu, Dhaalu Atolls
⚠️ Seaplane Tip: Seaplanes only fly during daylight hours. If your international flight arrives after 3pm, you'll need to overnight in Malé (airport transit hotel) before your seaplane transfer the next morning. Budget an extra night and ask your resort for their recommended transit hotel.

Essential Tips for Australian Travellers

🛡️

Travel Insurance

Medical evacuation from remote atolls is expensive. Get comprehensive cover with evacuation included. Compare on Canstar or Compare the Market before you go.

📱

Connectivity

Resorts have Wi-Fi but it can be slow. Buy a local Dhiraagu SIM at the airport for data. Telstra and Optus roaming works in Malé.

💳

Payment

Resorts charge in USD. Use a Wise or Up Bank card for fee-free foreign transactions. Bring USD cash for guesthouse tips and local markets.

👙

Dress Code

Bikinis are fine at resorts. On local islands (Malé, Maafushi etc.), cover up with a sarong. Pack a light scarf for mosque visits.

🌿

Reef Sunscreen

Use reef-safe mineral sunscreen only (zinc-based). Avobenzone and oxybenzone are banned in many resort areas to protect coral.

🔌

Power Points

Maldives uses UK-style 3-pin plugs (Type G). Bring a universal adapter. Voltage is 230V — same as Australia, just a different socket type.
